Department Mandate

In the past, CSMLS traditionally conducted membership-based research to support the operations of the society. Many of these projects involved institutional documents and data analyses and did not require ethical reviews at the time. As research endeavours grew and external requests to contact CSMLS members increased, the Research Ethics Board (REB) was created in 2006 to support ethical participation and oversight of members in research. The CSMLS seeks to conduct and facilitate research in accordance with accepted Canadian practices as laid out in the Tri-Council Policy Statement.

The CSMLS Research and Special Initiatives Department's research mandate:

Research Promotion:

  • Continue to nurture the research culture within medical laboratory science and the profession, building on current success.
  • Integrate the strengths of CSMLS to support academic partners in continuing to provide open learning, flexible programming, program laddering, opportunities for hands-on practicums through clinical placement and simulation and education structures for international and vulnerable students.
  • Promote the development of academic research by students and educators as an essential part of the medical laboratory profession’s future.
  • Provide consultation for research programs and studies.

Research Funding:

  • Administer research accounts and ensure compliance of research, expenditures with granting agencies and proper accounting overhead.
  • Raise funds for research from traditional and non-traditional sources.
  • Promote funding opportunities and help members, educators and students leverage funding for current and future scholarly activities.
  • Administer internal grant competitions and monitor award committees.

Project Facilitation:

  • Facilitate liaisons between government, industry, academic institutions and community groups for research projects.
  • Report on internal and external research activities, including publications and funding, and contributions to society and members.
