Clinical Preceptor Training

A clinical preceptor provides students with clinical placement experiences that support learning and development to achieve competence. CSMLS acknowledges the vital role preceptors play in creating the next-generation workforce. We understand that preceptors need specialised training to obtain the skills, judgement and ability to optimize the preceptor-to-student learning experience.

A preceptor is an experienced practitioner who provides supervision during clinical practice and facilitates the application of theory to practice for students and staff learners (1). A preceptor works with the learner for a defined period of time to assist the learner in acquiring new competencies required for safe, ethical, and quality practice. They assist the learner by setting expectations, providing effective feedback about their performance, and providing appropriate opportunities to meet their learning objectives. A preceptor may also be known by another name (e.g., clinical instructor), depending on the profession, school or clinical employer.

In discussion with the CSMLS Research Network, it was identified that medical laboratory academic programs are using different training options, tailored to local needs. At this time, a national standard does not exist. However, there is a wide variety of existing programs available. The Research Network identified a need for a compiled list of such programs to support information sharing nationally.

In addition to the information in the table, many of the academic programs have internal documented processes. If you would like more information or want to make an addition to the table, email research@csmls.org.

CSMLS does not endorse the use of any particular preceptor training program.
