The role of the Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) is regulated in most provinces within Canada. Each regulated province has its own requirements of professional development for MLTs to maintain their licenses to practise. We’ve put together a summary of these requirements in each regulated province.
Alberta
Regulatory College: College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA)
Requirements:
- 900 MLT Practice hours over the previous four years. In lieu of hours the CMLTA may accept CMLTA approved refresher coursework.
- Compliance with the Continuing Competence Program
- Creation of an annual Learning Plan outlining 3 – 6 Learning Objectives
- Completion of a minimum 3 Learning Objectives from the previous Registration year
- Documentation of Learning Activities utilized to complete the Learning Objectives on a CCP Activity Log.

Saskatchewan
Regulatory College: Saskatchewan Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (SSMLT)
Requirements:
- 1,200 practice hours over five years
- Continuing Education Program
- 2 credits over five years (1 credit = 15 hours of education

Manitoba
Regulatory College: College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM)
Requirements:
- Continuing Competence Program
- 1,200 MLT practice hours in the previous 5 years
- 45 hours of continuing education over previous five years
- At least 22.5 hours is obtained from formally documented activities,
- CE activities from at least 3 of the 5 categories,
- Formal CE activities have been assessed be CSMLS (PEP), ASCLS (P.A.C.E.) or CMLTM
- Completion of a self-assessment

Regulatory College: Newfoundland and Labrador College of Medical Laboratory Science (NLCMLS) in conjunction with the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals (NLCHP).
Requirements:
- 240 practice hours per year

Regulatory College: Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (NSCMLT)
Requirements:
- Valid and current TeKnowledge certificate
- 4 work credits (500 hours = 1 credit)
- 4 educational credits (1 hour = 0.1 credit or 40 hours over four years)
