Each year, we send a special thank you gift to our volunteers. In 2020, volunteers received CSMLS toques just in time for some winter social distancing activities.

I volunteer with the CSMLS for so many reasons! I can help raise awareness for medical laboratory technology, preserve the pride in our profession, learn and grow from my volunteering experiences and be part of a team working together to benefit the medical laboratory profession!

I care about the institution of laboratory medicine (I’m willing to wreck my hairdo with a toque for it!), and caring about this industry means getting involved in it beyond the bench, and looking at it from every angle. I like trying to find sustainable ways to help this profession grow and thrive across our country; and have a blast doing it with the rest of the volunteer crew!

My voyage as CSMLS volunteer started over a decade ago, 2008 to be precise when I participated as a member of CSMLS taskforce on Internationally Educated Medical Laboratory Technologists (IEMLTS), since then I have never looked back. I have volunteered with CSMLS in various capacities and I loved it. I volunteered in Exam panel, General Competency profile review committee, Content advisory committee, CSMLS professional development committee, Subject Matter Experts (SME) and Angoff session. The most recent volunteering experience with CSMLS was as an expert panel in CSMLS/ University of Alberta Choosing Wisely project.
I derived joy and happiness in volunteering for our noble society. My advice to members that never volunteer is to try it and I am sure they will like it. Long live CSMLS, Long Live Canada.

As a 50-plus year member of CSMLS and a volunteer for most of those years, I have to say, while I have always valued my membership, it was only after I started to volunteer that my whole perspective of our profession changed. I met other professionals, many are still great friends, who expanded my knowledge and love of laboratory science. Whether it was serving on a committee or on the BOD, every experience challenged me in so many positive ways. Volunteering requires a certain time and effort commitment but the rewards are infinitely more. Over the years, everyone on the CSMLS staff also has played a huge role in making volunteering a pleasure and I can’t thank them enough. Wearing my toque with pride.
