The Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is hosting a one-day event on November 15, 2018 in collaboration with SIM-one.

Event Description:
This event is structured in three parts:
- In the morning, SIM-one will work with attendees to create medical laboratory-specific, educator-based simulation training curricula based on its Keystone Certificate Program.
- The CSMLS and SIM-one partnership, and its event deliverable, is in alignment with the CSMLS position statement, “Use of Simulation to Reduce Clinical Placement Hours,” which recommends that a formalized and structured training model be adopted for academic faculty and clinical instructors of simulation to improve the quality as well as sustain growth of this educational technique within medical laboratory science programs.
- CSMLS will guide attendees through a process to identify and derive general recommendations for the use of simulation in the assessment and evaluation of competencies (includes competency sign off).
- Discussions with academic stakeholders and the Simulation Research Network have raised awareness regarding the variability and national understanding around using simulation to sign off on student competencies.
- MLA and MLT competency profiles will be examined, assuming that enough attendees have the expertise to provide recommendations for both.
- CSMLS will work with attendees to identify simulation curricula currently in use at accredited academic programs and discuss the tool CSMLS is creating to house such curricula and make it available to all programs (UOIT grant collaboration).

Event Deliverables:
After the event is concluded, several deliverables will be produced and made available to CSMLS members:
- CSMLS will produce a recommendation report based on attendee discussions regarding which competencies can be effectively assessed and evaluated by simulation.
- CSMLS will determine and collect simulation curricula that will be housed in an online database for academic programs to share.
- SIM-one will create simulation educator training curricula targeted for the medical laboratory community.

Audience: MLTs, MLAs, deans, regulators, clinical instructors, program chairs and educators (with and without a background in simulation).
Accommodations: Please consider staying at Hotel Arts Calgary. You are required to arrange your own hotel accommodations. CSMLS has not blocked hotel rooms for this event.

Due to seating requirements, a maximum of 40 registrants can participate.
An admission priority process will be in place to ensure that at least one representative is available to attend from each academic organization. As space is limited, a wait list may be used until seats become available.

Language: Proceedings will be conducted in English.
Travel Bursary:
Travel Bursary Lottery: Up to 20 travel bursaries ($500 each) will be provided to event attendees and awarded using a priority system and lottery process.
- One representative from each academic program associated with the Simulation Research Network at CSMLS will be given bursary priority.
- One representative from the remaining accredited academic organizations will be given the following priority.
- If multiple registrants are from one organization (includes multiple departments and campuses), local determination of who should receive the bursary is required. This information is required for the registration process.
- Should there be any remaining travel bursaries, this will be awarded to general admission registrants through the lottery system.
Travel Bursary Winners: Travel bursaries will be provided following confirmation of attendance at the event, receipt of the travel expense form with receipts to CSMLS and confirmation that expenses claimed are in accordance with the event travel policy.
