CALL FOR STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT

March 14, 2023
The national CSMLS Competency Profiles© are used nationwide as the backbone of the CSMLS certification exams and as the scope of practice for entry-level Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT) and Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA) (except in Quebec).

The national CSMLS Competency Profiles© are reviewed and updated for each professional medical laboratory designation to ensure competencies are appropriate and current. This generally occurs every 5-10 years, or whenever a designation experiences a major change in scope of practice.

CSMLS facilitates the preparation of a competency profile for each designation through a committee of selected and representative subject-matter experts from across Canada. The competency profile review process is designed to ensure adequate input and validation of the new standard from all stakeholder groups impacted by these changes.

The power to shape the scope of practice for the medical laboratory profession in Canada rests on this process.
