BCSLS Announces Move Towards Regulation

December 21, 2016
The Board of the BCSLS has announced that after years of advocating for the regulation of medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) and medical laboratory assistants (MLAs), the British Columbia government is proposing to establish a new College of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Health Professions [CDTHP].

The new College will regulate and license MLTs along with three other occupations in Phase One, which will occur within 12-18 months. Phase Two could see MLAs regulated along with six other occupations and the time frame would be closer to 18-24 months.

British Columbia is one of the last provinces in Canada to regulate MLTs and the new CDTHP will bring them in line with the rest of the country. Read more about this announcement here.

More information will be available from BCSLS as the new College rolls out in the coming months. CSMLS is pleased with this announcement and will be formally issuing a letter of support to the Government of British Columbia.
