There are two identified areas in which knowledge gaps are most likely to occur. A refresher gap is when you have not practiced a discipline within the last five years, for example, clinical chemistry. A comprehensive gap is an area in which you have little or no education, clinical internship and/or work experience. You will need to take a course to bring you up to date with current Canadian practice.
You can choose courses from the following approved courses:
If you have more than one comprehensive gap, you cannot qualify for the CSMLS exam through PLA. We will direct you to complete a full-time training program and suggest other options such as, MLA certification or consider exploring opportunities in Biotechnology (visit www.biotalent.ca for more information).
Other Ways to Complete Your Learning Plan
If you have located a course that is not on the pre-approved lists, you must ask the CSMLS to approve it for you. The course must be at the technologist level.
If you have a chance to get a clinical rotation, you must have CSMLS approve the clinical rotation for your learning plan.
Please refer to the Prior Learning Assessment Handbook for the approval process for these options.
Accredited Training Program
It may be recommended to complete a full-time accredited training program in order to complete your learning plan requirements.
After You Complete Your Learning Plan
Official transcripts must be submitted directly from the college or institution where you completed your course(s). After the CSMLS receives proof of your successful completion of the learning plan requirements, we will send you a Statement of Eligibility to the CSMLS Certification Exam.
